Second Grade


BIBLE (ABEKA)
Students cover stories from the Bible, including: Moses, the Tabernacle, Joshua, Ruth and Jonah. The life of Jesus Christ is also taught as Christian life principles and salvation are emphasized. Students learn Bible hymns and a new Bible memory verse each month.  Chapel services are held weekly.

HISTORY (ABEKA)
In the History course, students are taught geographic skills, map-reading, American patriotic songs, holidays and U.S. freedoms. U.S. history will also be taught which includes concepts about the Pilgrims, American Indians, early colonists, pioneers, cowboys and immigrants.

LANGUAGE (ABEKA)
Students build upon previous knowledge of sentence structure, punctuation and capitalization. They also learn language mechanics, dictionary skills, word usage rules, grammar and creative writing.

MATH (ABEKA)
Students will learn number recognition, counting and writing numbers through 10,000 and beyond. Also taught are ordinal numbers, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, story problems, rounding and estimation. Students will master concepts with fractions, time measures, temperature, graphs, simple geometry and Roman numerals.

PHONICS (ABEKA)
The Phonics course builds upon previous knowledge of vowels, consonants, blends, one and two-vowel words and consonant blends. Recognition and use of all phonics special sounds are taught and applied to daily coursework.
 
READING (ABEKA)
In the Reading course, students learn to apply skills taught in phonics and spelling in order to enhance oral reading. Vocabulary and sight word recognition are also utilized. Comprehension questions are used to test students for literal, interpretive and critical understanding.

SCIENCE (ACSI – PURPOSEFUL DESIGN)
Building on level one, this course helps students gain a deeper appreciation of God’s Creation through scientific observation, experimentation, and analysis.  Life science, physical science, earth science, and human body topics are explored using vivid worksheets, hands-on activities, and journaling.

SPELLING (ACSI)
This series approaches spelling as a critical literacy skill that strengthens reading and writing ability.  Spelling strategies such as word sorting by phonetic pattern, developing vocabulary through word study, and using the writing process to compose original stories pervade the books.   The five-day instructional format of the word list lessons begins with the “Warm Up” (Pretest) on Day 1 and concludes with the “Wrap Up” (Posttest) on Day 5.  Day 2 is reserved for “Phonics” instruction, Day 3 for “Word Study,” and Day 4 for “Writing.” Lesson activities strengthen the students’ skills in decoding, encoding, vocabulary, word building, proof reading, and creative word application in daily writing.

WRITING (ABEKA)
Students review manuscript letter formation and are taught cursive writing. Neatness and spacing are emphasized.
